In a world where consumers are constantly bombarded with advertising, getting your product directly into someone's hands remains one of the most effective marketing tactics available for FMCG brands. Tactical sampling takes this concept a step further by placing products in environments where they're most relevant, useful and likely to drive action.
The key to successful sampling isn't simply reaching large numbers of people. It's about reaching the right people at the right moment. When location, audience and product align, brands can create memorable experiences that lead to trial, purchase and long-term loyalty.
Here are five locations where tactical sampling delivers results.
1. Gyms
Who is it for?
Gyms are ideal for health, wellness and performance-focused products that are looking to get themselves in front of the fitness community. Things such as;
- Protein and nutrition products
- Sports drinks and hydration brands
- Healthy snacks
- Supplements
- Fitness technology and wearables
- Wellness and recovery products
Why does it work there?
Gym-goers are already in a mindset focused on health, self-improvement and performance. This means products that support these goals feel highly relevant rather than disruptive or annoying.
The timing is particularly powerful. Whether someone is arriving for a workout, finishing a training session or refuelling afterwards, they're often looking for products that enhance their fitness journey. Sampling in this environment allows consumers to experience a product in a contextual moment and it’s benefit to them.
Examples
- Fueling Fitness (Onest Energy)
We created a targeted gym sampling campaign that aligned with Onest’s target audience we went into Puregym and Anytime Fitness. We sampled drinks to fitness fanatics across the 3 month campaign while having the Onest team on site was key to help consumers understand the product better and taking the campaign beyond the 4 walls and out onto socials.
2. Offices
Who is it for?
Offices provide access to busy professionals and are ideal for:
- Coffee and beverage brands
- Healthy snacks
- Meal replacement products
- Productivity and wellbeing brands
- Functional food and drink products
Why does it work there?
Office workers are often looking for convenient solutions to support their working day. Whether it's combating the afternoon slump, replacing an unhealthy snack or finding an energy boost before a meeting, products can solve real-world needs in real time.
Sampling also benefits from social influence. A successful office activation often sparks conversations between colleagues, creating additional awareness and recommendations beyond the initial sample recipients.
Examples
We delivered a tactical office sampling programme across London, Manchester and Birmingham, activating workplaces near Sainsbury’s Local stores. This created a clear purchase path, connecting in-the-moment trial with immediate retail availability, supported by insight capture to measure response and inform future launches.
3. Takeaways
Who is it for?
Takeaway partnerships are particularly effective for:
- Soft drinks
- Snack brands
- Confectionery
- Health supplements
- Consumer packaged goods
- New product launches
Why does it work there?
Takeaway deliveries place brands directly into consumers' homes when they are relaxed and engaged. Unlike many traditional advertising channels, the sample arrives alongside an expected purchase, creating a natural moment of discovery.
The targeting opportunities are significant. Brands can align with specific cuisines, demographics, ordering behaviours or geographic locations, ensuring products reach highly relevant audiences.
Examples
- Spooners
They were looking to focus on in-home sampling moments to provide better consumption context, positioning an indulgent product within a moment of indulgence: sitting on the sofa in the evening and enjoying a well-earned cheat meal. To achieve this, 3,000 tubs of cookie dough were placed in takeaway orders from burger and pizza restaurants, geo-targeted across Chiswick, Richmond, and Hammersmith, which were identified as key takeaway locations for ABC1 families.
4. National Campaigns
Who is it for?
National sampling campaigns are suitable for brands looking to achieve scale, including:
- FMCG brands
- Household products
- Food and beverage launches
- Beauty and personal care products
- Subscription services
Why does it work there?
One of the biggest strengths of tactical sampling is its scalability. Brands can move from local activations to nationwide distribution while maintaining targeting precision.
National campaigns allow brands to build awareness quickly across multiple regions while gathering data, driving retail sales and supporting broader marketing activity. Sampling can be integrated into media campaigns, retail promotions and seasonal launches to maximise impact.
Examples
Have done this like no other brand. What started off as a relatively small operation to test the waters has been scaled up over years alongside the team at GottaBe! to continue their growth and reach across the UK.

5. Out-of-Home (OOH) Locations
Who is it for?
OOH sampling works particularly well for brands that benefit from immediate consumption or contextual relevance, including:
- Food and drink brands
- Convenience products
- Seasonal products
- Lifestyle and consumer brands
- Experiential marketing campaigns
Why does it work there?
The OOH activity helps drive awareness by hitting people when they need to see it, while office sampling provides an opportunity for trial where the context is right, increasing consumers' propensity to purchase.
Examples
We conducted an office sampling campaign alongside their Spring OOH campaign, distributing 6,000 samples across London in locations where OOH placements were present. This set-up means the two work together as mentioned to help drive the propensity to purchase.
Our thoughts
The most successful sampling campaigns don't focus solely on reach. They focus on relevance.
Whether you're targeting fitness enthusiasts in gyms, professionals in offices, consumers at home through takeaway partnerships, audiences nationwide, or people on the move through OOH activations, tactical sampling works best when the product meets the consumer at the perfect moment.
The right location creates context. The right audience creates relevance. Together, they create meaningful product experiences that drive real results.
