5 Ways A Digital Detox Can Be Beneficial To You

10th October 2019

With it being World Mental Health Day today, we wanted to discuss the topic of digital detoxes. Let’s start firstly by asking, what is a digital detox? It is, in essence, a break from using digital devices. This includes your smartphone, tablet, computer and social media platforms, to name a few. In an age where we are constantly connected, it’s easier said than done to do a digital detox. Work e-mails come through constantly, Instagram tells you who’s posted, who’s gone live and who’s liked your latest post and Facebook updates you about everything… Don’t forget though, a digital detox doesn’t have to be permanent. It could be months, it could be weeks, it could even be one day. Whatever is most effective for you. We’re guilty of being over connected here at GottaBe! (with that said, it is our job to be…) and so we wanted to share 5 ways a digital detox can be beneficial to you.

1. Sleep

Starting off with one that if you’ve looked into digital detoxes, you’ll most definitely have heard about. By disconnecting you are not exposed to blue screen which is known to impact our sleep. By detoxing, you won’t be affected by the emissions thus, sleeping deeper and waking well rested.

2. Anxiety

Whether we’d like to admit it or not, being constantly connected to apps, social media and the internet is facilitating widespread anxiety. Even if you don’t consider yourself to be that invested in social media, if X is sharing a photo of their perfect holiday, dusted with a filter here and there, you find yourself comparing yourself to said person and subsequently begin to begrudge individuals because they are sharing the exciting things they’re up to, whilst you’re sat on your lunch break at work. Remember, social media is a highlights reel.

3. Attention Span

With our phones, apps, etc. going off all day, every day, it can be difficult to focus on the task at hand. And with the instantaneous nature of content now, our attention spans have drastically cut down. Doing, reading or watching something, for example, can be so much harder when there’s one hundred other things going round your mind thanks to all the channels of communication. A digital detox will of course, allow you to re-train your focus and allow for a longer attention span.

4. Health

A digital detox will improve your health; both mental and physical. Not only will taking some time away from it all allow for improvement with the aforementioned points, but also stop eating into time for you to enjoy a yoga class or head to the gym session that you’ve been putting off all week…

5. Switching Off

Smartphones have made it incredibly easy to stay connected to work – particularly those of us whom work in a digital or social media focussed role. By taking a digital detox or setting stricter rules for yourself, you won’t find yourself responding to work e-mails at 10pm. You are able to keep a balance and thus enjoy your me time.
